With this 'Ortswein' (village wine), the Kranz family demonstrates the potential of the unique terroir surrounding their home village of Ilbesheim. The grapevines are deeply rooted here in soils of limestone and loess. Because yields are kept lower in these specific vineyards, the grapes have much more concentrated flavor.
To achieve that complexity, the wine is given significantly more time after fermentation. It ages longer on its fine lees, with Boris Kranz often opting for a combination of stainless steel tanks and traditional large wooden barrels.
The nose is layered and often needs some time to fully open up. On the palate, it is remarkably full-bodied and powerful, with firm acidity and an impressively long, mineral finish. This is a wine that is already delicious now but can easily continue to mature beautifully for another five to eight years!
